Shark Cage Diving

Activity Description

All trips are weather and tide dependant and launch times may vary accordingly from those stated. Your launch time will be confirmed the day before.

Unlike bungy jumping or sky diving, the adrenaline rush from shark cage diving comes from being face to face with one of the world’s greatest predators: the Great White Shark.

The experience puts you in their territory while the safety of the activity allows you to be an observer and learn what Great White Sharks are really like. An on board marine biologist will educate you about this amazing apex predator.

Shark Cage Diving is safe for children and elders and gives the whole family a wonderful opportunity to bond in a fun environment surrounded by experts and researchers.

After this once in a life time experience, you’ll find yourself buzzing with excitement and adrenaline. You will have had the opportunity to come up close and personal with one of the oceans most majestic and foreboding creatures.

Here is a brief breakdown of what to expect once you arrive:
• Before the trip guests meet at THE GREAT WHITE HOUSE in Kleinbaai
• You will receive breakfast or lunch and register your wetsuit size
• Guests receive a pre-trip safety briefing about what to expect during the trip and a biological background on great white sharks
• We then take a 200m stroll down to the harbour to board Slashfin
• Travel time to Dyer Island is approximately 20 minutes, with the shallows being a short 10 minute ride (where we anchor depends on where the sharks are)
• On average, we anchor for 2 hours, but this depends on shark activity, conditions, as well as number of divers
• Weather permitting, we take a quick trip through the infamous Shark Alley
• Lastly, a debrief in the Great White House and a celebratory beverage to toast the occasion!

Why We Are Different:
• A dedicated marine biologist on board every trip
• Our Boat (Slashfin) is the largest in the industry (most deck space per customer) and was purposely built for shark cage diving and includes two restrooms, and an upper deck for the ultimate viewing and photography experience when not in the cage.
• A fully licensed Restaurant and Crew House, aptly named the GREAT WHITE HOUSE, which includes facilities such as: 2 marine rooms where professional safety and informative briefings are given before each trip + separate ladies/gents/handicap restroom facilities with a 5-star rating + curio shop
• We guarantee clean, dry wetsuits (a rarity in the industry)
• Our crew receives as many compliments as the Great White Sharks, with more combined experience than any other Shark Cage Diving crew.
• You will leave with great memories and a deep appreciation of this majestic animal.

Customer Reviews

All round this was a fantastic experience. From the start the booking staff were extremely helpful and also on reception on the morning of the dive. The knowledge and experience of all the crew enabled us to have a very rewarding experience culminating in the appearance of a marvellous great white. We would definitely visit Gaansbai again and would stay for longer to enable us to do the dive again and also to take part in the whale watching experience which unfortunately was cancelled due to the weather. Thank you all once again for a fantastic and informative experience and please keep up the wonderful conservation work. - Raymond Lees

Main objective was to swim with great white sharks. Did not see one great white shark. Got extremely sick on the boat (A’s did everyone else). visibility was low, was cold, got chum in my mouth, and the wetsuit didn’t fit. Was counting down the minutes till it was over. Slop soup and bread roll after was the highlight. - Ryan Alderman

Up bright and early at 0500 for the well anticipated morning Shark Hunt, enjoyed a tasty light breakfast and a well presented brief and video from the crew leader. Boarded the rip fin (or something like that!) great sturdy platform for the cage Diving ahead of us. The morning was stunning and slightly overcast with a large lazy swell. After a small transit we were almost immediately greeted by two large bronze whalers and two huge rays. On the final cage run and my second dive an infant seal turned up and within minutes we were graced by the presence of a 4 metre white shark by the name of Skarlicky (as I recall!) She didn’t hang round for long but what I did witness was an awesome double pass of the cage As she thrashed out a lightning quick turn one of her pectoral fins entered the cage and brushed past my gloveless hand....”I’ve just touched a wild Great White!!” I thought to myself. I even made eye contact into those large deep black eyes of hers and almost felt like it was a split second connection between man and Apex predator! #Buzzing! Thanks to all at Marine Dynamics and the volunteers and fellow shark splashers who made the morning thouroughly worthwhile and enjoyable day. Graeme UK x - Graeme Harrison

Wonderful experience! My family and I had a blast. The guides were helpful and very nice. I would highly recommend! - Brian Briggeman

It's been 3 times we went with Encounters: 2 for the shark cage diving and one for the whales watching: it was always a great time! The service and the staff is perfect. The biologist and other staff are eager to answer all your questions. You also can feel the nice ambiance between the staff. Last time we didn't see a long the time the white shark but a copper one who was really beautiful. We were not disappointed as the trip worth the tour and it is really beautiful. Thanks a lot and see you next time! - Gaëlle Dessus
