The duration of the Marine Big 5 Tour spans between 2 to 2.5 hours, depending upon wildlife sightings and prevailing weather conditions. All tours launch from Kleinbaai Harbour in close proximity to Gansbaai. Dyer Island, located 8 km offshore, stands as an access-controlled Important Bird Area (IBA), safeguarding numerous resident avian species, including the endangered African penguin. Situated adjacent to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock, which is home to a robust colony of 60,000 Cape fur seals, present year-round. Our journey will take us through the world-famous channel known as ‘Shark Alley’, nestled between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, Gansbaai include various species of seabirds such as albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters, gannets and terns, these birds are adapted to life at sea and can be seen gliding over the waves, diving for fish, or resting on the water’s surface. Next, we will navigate to prime whale viewing areas within the bay. With a wealth of over two decades of experience, we possess an innate awareness of optimal whale sighting locations. The Southern right whale season extends from June to November, during which our focus shifts to observing these magnificent creatures as they visit our coastal waters for mating and calving purposes. Throughout the year, we may also encounter the more reserved resident Bryde’s whale. The period spanning December to June offers opportunities to actively search for this species during our tours. Additionally, we may encounter the majestic Humpback whales during the initiation and conclusion of their migration cycle. Our region also boasts three distinct dolphin species—common, bottlenose, and the endangered humpback variety. As luck would have it, we may have the privilege of encountering one of these species. This marine adventure includes a visit to the shark cage diving vessels in the area to offer a sighting of a bronze whaler shark or the awe-inspiring great white shark.
It’s important to acknowledge that this is wildlife we work with and we cannot guarantee sightings; however, our dedicated team strives to provide opportunities to witness as many members of the Marine Big 5 as possible.
A hallmark of our tours lies in their fusion of enjoyment and education. Each excursion is led by seasoned marine biologists and guides, who eagerly share their wealth of knowledge with you, all while upholding a strong commitment to animal welfare and conservation. At the core of our ethos is responsible tourism, epitomized by our dedication to research, conservation initiatives, education, and the betterment of our local community.
To facilitate a seamless experience, all clients will receive an online check-in link. Completion of this process, including the signing of the indemnity form, is mandatory for tour participation.

Vriendelike diens. Aangename ervaring. goeie gids en bemanning. - JW de Villiers
Wonderful sightings: Southern Rights, sharks, African penguins & Cape fur seals! Hospitality before (lovely muffins!!) and after (heartwarming soup & gorgeous warm rolls!) a lovely and welcome touch. My only critique would be that the tour guide needs some microphone & presrntation training to make the information more engaging. - Rochelle Gosling
It was a great experience. Staff was great and helpful and overall got a pleasant experience. We did the whale watching with a 1 and 3 year old and the entire time felt safe with the kids there. - Leurika Roodt

Marine Dynamics enjoys sightings of copper sharks (bronze whalers), visiting great white sharks and even the occasional stingray at our vessel. Great White Shark behaviour is less predictable post orca predation in 2017. Daily blog of sightings is available. All content on our website is the property of Marine Dynamics.

Unlike bungy jumping or sky diving, the adrenaline rush from shark cage diving comes from being face to face with our ocean’s top predators.
The experience puts you in their territory while the safety of the activity allows you to be an observer and learn what these sharks are really like. An onboard marine biologist will educate you about these amazing predators.
Shark Cage Diving is safe for children and elders and gives the whole family a wonderful opportunity to bond in a fun environment surrounded by experts and researchers.
After this once in a lifetime experience, you’ll find yourself buzzing with excitement and adrenaline. You will have had the opportunity to come up close and personal with one of the oceans most majestic and foreboding creatures.
Here is a brief breakdown of what to expect once you arrive:
• Before the trip guests meet at THE GREAT WHITE HOUSE in Kleinbaai
• Guests receive a pre-trip safety briefing about what to expect during the trip and a biological background on great white sharks
• We then take a 200m stroll down to the harbour to board Slashfin
• Travel time to Dyer Island is approximately 20 minutes, with the shallows being a short 10-minute ride (where we anchor depends on where the sharks are)
• On average, we anchor for 2 hours, but this depends on shark activity, conditions, as well as the number of divers
• Weather permitting, we take a quick trip through the infamous Shark Alley
• Lastly, a debrief in the Great White House
Why We Are Different:
• A dedicated marine biologist onboard every trip
• Our Boat (Slashfin) is the largest in the industry (most deck space per customer) and was purposely built for shark cage diving and includes two restrooms, and an upper deck for the ultimate viewing and photography experience when not in the cage.

• We guarantee clean, dry wetsuits (a rarity in the industry)
• Our crew receives as many compliments as the Great White Sharks, with more combined experience than any other Shark Cage Diving crew.

Absolutely enthralling experience! Amidst icy waters of Gaansbaai, I faced my fears of the Great depths of the unknown, coming face to face with the infamous predators of the ocean. The sharks were in their element & so was I! Will definitely come back & highly recommend to others for the most adrenaline surging activity! - Prelene Neerputh
Amazing experience. This was my third shark cage trip with Marine Dynamics and it didn't disappoint. So well organised. The crew were great and really looked after us including a friend who was sea sick. They made it such fun and at the same time educational focusing on conservation. Big thanks to the team and I would recommend to anyone. - Joanna Parry
What a fantastic experience.... A thoroughly worth while trip and extremely well organised by Marine Dynamics. All the staff are well experienced in their tasks. The cage diving was divided into 4 "cages". The only downside was the 2nd cage viewing - a Whale watcher boat intruded severely on the Dynamics boat, blocking access on both sides of the cage at times, preventing the Bronzies from coming in to the bait or blocking their departure routes. I have no knowledge of local rules, but this intrusion was most disappointing. At least half of the dive time for the 2nd cage was "destroyed" by the Whale Catcher boat. I have no knowledge if this is a planned move by the Whale watcher as they "promise" their customers the "big 5" in the area. Nevertheless, the whole dive experience from breakfast snacks, the DIVE and the hot pumpkin soup afterward was fantastic. Thank you for a wonderful trip - Pieter DU TOIT
Words cannot explain the marvelous Sharkira!!! Experience... The Sharks was graceful and elegant in their natural environment where they belong. From beginning to end you guys have outdone yourself.. Thank you for the wonderful 1st Trip on the 26 Oct 2024 and Thank You for the tremendous help and assistance in the conservation of our Marine Life...Most Pietermaritzburg KZN - Anita Hoosen
What an amazing experience - Our marine biologist was fabulous. Had a fantastic time and will definitely be back! - Michelle Mawson
